THE HALVARDEN STORY

BOOK A CALL WITH OUR TEAM →

Every organisation has a story about how it got here. This one starts in a lecture hall rather than a boardroom. What follows is where the practice came from, what it’s built to do, and where it’s headed.

Bringing the university into the workplace.

A lot of genuinely useful expertise sits exactly where it was produced, whether in universities, research departments, or specialist practices, and rarely reaches the people who could best put it to use. This happens because most institutions that produce good thinking aren’t set up to communicate that thinking too widely, and most organisations that need it, don’t have an easy way to reach it.

Halvarden exists to connect expertise with practice. The company runs across four broad strands: advisory, consultancy, courses, and research, powered by the same underlying expertise wherever it happens to apply.

Our training reflects the same thinking. Most professional development exists to satisfy a requirement whether that’s a box ticked, a certificate filed, or a compliance obligation met. Halvarden starts from a different position by asking what would someone actually need to understand to do this better, and builds from there. Sometimes that means a course. Sometimes it means something closer to a diagnostic, a framework, or an ongoing advisory relationship. The form follows the problem; never the other way around.

Halvarden, n. Norwegian name Hallvarðr deriving from the components hallr meaning “rock” or “stone”, and the Old Norse vǫrðr meaning “guardian” or “protector”. One who stands watch over something valuable until it is needed.

Expertise is a precious commodity but it isn’t worth much until someone puts it to work. Halvarden takes that premise seriously, not by hoarding expertise, or hiding it away, but by holding it carefully enough, and understanding it deeply enough, to bring it into a client’s hands at the exact point it’s needed.

We also like to think of ourselves as guardians of integrity. It’s a value embedded in all that we do. We don’t follow shortcuts, proffer buzzwords, or engage with a problem we don’t have the expertise to resolve.

Where expertise meets practice.

Nobody rings up asking for advisory services by name. What they have is a specific problem, whether a governance gap, a policy nobody can quite follow, or a training obligation that’s been technically satisfied without changing what anyone actually does. Working out which kind of help best fits the problem takes a proper, honest conversation rather than a service menu.

Sometimes that conversation turns into a diagnostic. Sometimes it’s a framework built to stay with the client’s own team once the engagement ends. Sometimes it’s training, and, even then, the aim is a sector-specific course rather than one course adapted for everyone, because a legal team and a clinical team don’t necessarily share the same pressures, or have the same needs.

What stays constant is the standard behind it. The work is judged by whether it changes what someone understands and how they act on it, not by whether a deliverable was produced on schedule. That’s a harder standard to meet than most professional services hold themselves to, and a harder one to fake. It also means the shape of an engagement is genuinely allowed to change once the real problem comes into view, rather than being locked in place by a scope written before anyone properly understands what was needed.

Dr Terry McDonough,
Managing Director

Halvarden’s approach comes directly from its founder’s own path. Terry holds a PhD in linguistics from Lancaster University, built on years spent studying how meaning is constructed, misread, and lost in human communication, work that started in a lecture theatre long before it became a company.

That academic grounding is still doing the work. It’s the reason Halvarden treats a client’s problem as something to understand properly before proposing a fix, rather than reaching for whatever’s already available on the shelf.

Towards full-service expertise.

What started as one person’s expertise, applied to problems he understood well, hasn’t stayed there. Halvarden now works across advisory, consultancy, research, and training, and the sectors it serves have grown past where it began because the underlying method turned out to travel further than the discipline it came from. A way of thinking built around how language and understanding actually work doesn’t stay confined to any one field once you start looking for where it applies.

That growth is deliberate rather than incidental. Each new area Halvarden takes on gets held to the same standard as the first: understand the problem properly before proposing anything, and judge the work by whether it changes how someone practices, not by whether something was delivered on schedule. Expansion for its own sake, taking on sectors or services just because the market exists, would undermine exactly the thing that makes the practice worth choosing over a larger, more generic provider.

Where this leads next is shaped by the same question that started the company: where is expertise currently sitting unused, and what would it take to put it properly into someone’s hands?
